“Vivienne,” my father said, and his voice had changed into something I had never heard from him before, a low and level tone that carried the weight of every investigation he had ever conducted. “I want you to tell me, in front of these two people, exactly what happened to your wrist.”
Julian’s jaw tightened, but before he could speak again, my father raised one hand, and the gesture was so absolute that my husband’s words died in his throat. Beatrice took a half step forward as though she meant to physically intervene, yet she stopped the moment Dad’s pale green eyes slid toward her, and I watched her swallow whatever lie she had been preparing.
I pulled back the cuff of my sleeve with my good hand, and the room grew very quiet as the full damage came into view. The bruises around my ribs were old and yellowing at the edges, but the marks on my arm were fresh, a perfect set of fingerprints pressed into the soft skin above my elbow, and there were more beneath the fabric, a constellation of purple and blue that climbed all the way to my shoulder.
