What happened in the next ten seconds is the part everyone on that base would talk about for years afterward. The part that turned an ordinary military retirement ceremony into something nobody who was there would ever forget.
The other six dogs broke too — one by one, almost like a current passing through water.
Rex, a Belgian Malinois usually so locked onto his handler’s hand signals that he barely blinked without permission, simply stopped mid-stride and pivoted. Juno, the youngest, still finishing her advanced training, let out a sharp bark and bolted before her handler could even reach for her leash. Biscuit, Drake, Sable, Mack — each of them abandoned their handlers and turned toward the same spot in the bleachers. Within four seconds, all seven dogs were moving in the same direction, ignoring every command shouted after them, ignoring the startled crowd, ignoring everything except the girl sitting alone at the back of the room.
Three hundred people went dead silent.
