The district incorporated residential units with adjustable fixtures accommodating residents from four and a half feet to nearly eight feet in height, public plazas with seating designed at multiple comfortable heights rather than a single standard bench measurement, and commercial spaces whose doorways, counters, and circulation paths had been calculated from actual demographic data on human body variation rather than the narrow, decades-old averages most municipal codes still quietly assumed.
“It shouldn’t feel radical to build spaces that fit the actual range of human bodies,” Clara told a reporter covering the opening, standing in the district’s central plaza where children of varying heights, elderly residents using mobility aids, and adults across the full spectrum of human stature moved through the space with the particular unremarkable ease that came from architecture finally designed to accommodate them properly. “But it apparently is radical, given how rarely it’s actually been attempted at this scale before us.”
