They Humiliated a Waitress Protecting Her Dog—Unaware a Mafia Boss Was Watching and Ready to Act
Chapter 2
Wait. Hold on.
My mom sent me that photo to post in every lost dog group I could find. She works at Ashford’s. She said I had to find the owner before the Witmores did something to the dog — and to Belle.
I posted it everywhere. Facebook. Reddit. Even some WhatsApp groups for animal rescue networks in Maine.
I didn’t think anything would come of it. I mean — what are the chances, right? A random giant dog shows up in a tiny coastal town and someone’s actually looking for it?
But about forty minutes ago, I got a call back. Not from a rescue group. Not from a shelter. From a man named Declan. He asked me three questions:
1. Where exactly is the dog?
2. Is the black collar still on him?
3. Who’s been taking care of him?
His voice was calm. Too calm. The kind of calm that makes the hair on your arm stand up because you can hear the storm underneath.
I told him everything. Crestwood. Ashford’s Diner on Harbor Road. The dog’s sick, he’s with a woman named Belle, and the Witmore family has been trying to take the diner from her for months.
Declan said, “Don’t let anyone touch that collar.”
I said, “Why?”
He said, “Because the dog’s name is Caesar. And his owner has been looking for him for five days.”
Then he asked me one more thing.
“What kind of people are the Witmores?”
I told him the truth. I said they own the town. The police chief is their brother-in-law. They broke Belle’s business. They broke her spirit. And tonight, they might have broken her too.
There was a pause. Then Declan said something I still can’t get out of my head.
He said, “That’s good to know.”
*That’s good to know?*
He didn’t say *that’s terrible*. He didn’t say *we’re calling the police*. He said *that’s good to know* — like someone who’s been holding back and just got permission not to.
My hands are shaking as I type this. I’m still in Portland. I can’t get to Crestwood fast enough. But if anyone in that town is reading this — if you’re near Harbor Road — please.
Go to Ashford’s Diner.
Belle doesn’t know who’s coming.
