King Theron looked up from his desk, and the weariness on his face was not the weariness of age but of a man who had been reading difficult things for too many hours. He was in his shirt-sleeves, his crown set aside on a cushion like a hat he had forgotten to put away, and he looked less like the ruler of a kingdom and more like a tired father at the end of a long day. That, perhaps, was why Alys could speak at all.
