The Fergusons finally stopped smiling an hour later.

I hadn’t told them what I’d started. I stayed beside Abigail’s bed, one hand wrapped around hers, and I waited the way I’d been taught to wait—patient, still, a coiled wire under calm skin. A nurse came and went. A doctor examined the injuries and wrote careful notes that made Abigail flinch every time the pen touched the page. Each flinch carved something out of me that I did not have the time to feel.

Then the door opened.

Two investigators entered first, dark jackets, badges already in their hands. Behind them came a military legal officer carrying a sealed folder so thick that his fingers had gone white around the edges.

Patricia’s composure cracked for the first time that night.

“Rachel,” she whispered. “What is this?”
