The Mafia Boss Saw Me Bandaging a Stray Dog — Then He Quietly Followed Me Home Alone

Chapter 8

For a moment, the conversation settled into comfortable silence. Then something unexpected happened. The white stray suddenly slipped through an open kennel gate, and before any volunteer could react, the dog raced directly across the room — not toward Maya. Toward Raphael.

The shelter went strangely quiet.

The dog stopped in front of him and sat. Then, without hesitation, it rested its head against his leg.

Raphael froze completely. The dog remained there, calm and content, as though it had finally found someone it trusted. Maya watched Raphael’s face carefully. Something changed in his expression — the guarded walls she always sensed around him seemed to weaken for a brief moment. Not disappear. Just crack.

He crouched slowly beside the dog. His hand settled gently on the animal’s head. The noise of the shelter faded into the background. Rain tapped against the windows. A phone rang somewhere. None of it seemed to reach him.

“That’s unusual,” Maya said quietly.

Raphael nodded without looking up.

“You miss him,” she said, stepping closer. “Don’t you?”

He knew who she meant. Luca. For several seconds he remained silent. Then, finally: “Every day.”

The honesty surprised her. No carefully constructed answer. Just truth.

Maya sat down on a nearby bench. “My father died when I was nineteen.”

Raphael looked toward her. She rarely talked about it.

“Some days it feels normal,” she continued softly. “Other days it feels like it happened yesterday.”

He listened without interrupting. Outside, thunder rolled faintly across the river.

“Everyone says grief shrinks,” Maya said. “I don’t think it does. I think it stays the same size. You just get better at carrying it.”

The words hung between them. Raphael lowered his eyes to the dog again. For the first time since she’d met him, Maya felt as though she was speaking to the real man instead of the mystery surrounding him.

Then the dog did something neither of them expected. He climbed onto the bench between them and curled up, as if he belonged there.

Maya laughed. Raphael shook his head slightly.

“Looks like he made a decision,” he said.

“About what?”
