The Mafia Boss Came to Take His Dog Back—But What the Dog Did Next Left Everyone Stunned
Chapter 2
The next morning brought unexpected drama. Clara arrived at work to find Walt pacing behind the counter, his face flushed with agitation.
“What’s wrong?” she asked, hanging up her jacket.
“That Cherokee fellow,” Walt said, wringing his hands. “He’s caused quite a stir. Mayor Griggs got wind of his building project and sent the city inspector up to his property. Turns out he doesn’t have the proper permits. They’ve ordered him to stop construction immediately.”
“But he just bought all that lumber yesterday.”
“That’s not the worst part,” Walt continued. “Harold — I mean Walter Griggs — he’s telling everyone we can’t have outsiders coming in and doing whatever they please. Says the mountain land Daniel bought sits on unstable ground, needs special review, all sorts of red tape suddenly appearing that never applied to anyone else building up there before.”
Clara felt an unfamiliar protective anger rise in her chest. She’d lived her whole life absorbing the town’s casual cruelty without much resistance, but something about Daniel’s situation struck her differently. “That doesn’t sound right,” she said. “The Hendricks family built their cabin on that same ridge two years ago without half this trouble.”
