She woke to gray light and the smell of coffee and bacon drifting up the stairs, and for a moment she did not know where she was — then the memory arrived like a bell, clear and whole. A stranger’s ranch. A stranger’s kindness. A broken wheel that was, by some mercy, no longer her problem.

Mrs. Ortega had laid out a washbasin and a clean towel and a dress that had been mended at the shoulder with stitches so fine they looked like they had grown there. Eleanor dressed slowly, running her palm over the fabric, and found she could not remember the last time someone had done something for her without expecting the ledger to be balanced.

The kitchen was warm and loud with the clatter of pans. Caleb Mercer was already at the table, hat off, hair still damp from the pump, and he stood when she came in — a small courtliness that made her want to laugh and somehow also made her heart beat a little heavier. He pulled out the chair across from him.
