Frost dusted the grass pale gold in the first light. Jake stepped into the barn holding a dented coffee mug in one hand and a bowl of fresh water in the other. Ranger lay curled on the blanket, head lifting as he entered. The amber eyes met his — guarded, alert. No growl, no wag. Just watching.
Jake set the water down beside the half-full bowl of kibble from last night. “Morning, Ranger,” he said in a low, steady voice.
