Four weeks before that morning, the three of them had stood in my kitchen with the news that was supposed to make me thank them.
I had discovered the empties in my savings by accident: a transfer of the emergency fund, gone in two clean strokes of a banker’s pen. Then the mortgage note on my kitchen table with my name forged across the signature line, and the guesthouse key in the pocket of Jade’s brother Troy, who had moved his toolboxes in without a word of permission. When I had confronted them, they had not apologized.
“You should be grateful, Eleanor” — Jade had smiled the brittle, patient smile people use on children and strays — “at your age, having family take charge of everything is a blessing.”
