My Late Mother’s Hidden Letter Revealed My Husband Was Her Chosen Heir
Chapter 2
Inside were my mother’s things.
Her pearl earrings. The ones she wore every Sunday. Her wedding ring, which I had assumed was buried with her. A small photograph of the two of them, young and unguarded, standing in front of a building I did not recognize. A lock of hair tied with a piece of red thread.
And at the very bottom of the box, beneath everything else, a sealed envelope.
My name was written on the front.
In my mother’s handwriting.
My hands were shaking so badly that I tore the envelope the first time I tried to open it. I had to stop, breathe, and start again.
The letter was three pages. Her handwriting was smaller than I remembered — compressed, careful, as if she had been aware that space was limited and she needed to use every inch of it.
