The sirens were the first thing I heard clearly — thin and far away, like a phone ringing in another room. Then came the cold of the gurney straps. A paramedic’s voice counting my breaths. The white ceiling of the ambulance sliding past the edge of my vision. I thought of Lily. Her small hand on my cheek. The way she pressed her forehead to mine before she fell asleep. And I thought, with a strange, hollow calm: they are going to take her from me.
Someone held my hand the whole way. I never saw who. I squeezed back without meaning to.
Before the doors closed, a face leaned over mine. Dark green. Calm eyes. Colonel Carter, still crouched beside the stretcher, spoke low enough that only I could hear.
“Mrs. Whitaker, I need you to know something. I’ve seen this before.”
I struggled to focus. “Seen what?”
