The drive north was slower than it should have been.

Snow layered itself over the highway in sheets that erased the road line by line. Declan kept both hands on the wheel, eyes forward, jaw set. In the truck bed, under the storm, the shepherd lay without a sound — not whining, not scratching, not pacing. That silence was wrong. Strays complained. Strays pawed at the glass. This animal rode the frozen miles the way a soldier rides a humvee in convoy, patient and present.

Halfway home, the wind picked up, and Declan pulled over. He didn’t think about it. He just stopped the truck, climbed out into the white, and opened the passenger door. “Get in.”

The dog leapt up smoothly, no hesitation, no awkward scrambling — the motion of a creature long accustomed to vehicle transport. It curled into the footwell and lay still, head resting on its paws.
