Mafia Boss Found a Little Girl and Her Dog Sleeping on Trash—What He Did Next Shocked All
Chapter 2
Her fingers stayed curled around the key even in sleep.
Alfred stood in the doorway of the sitting room, watching the firelight play across her face. The mansion was silent. The dog’s head rested on her legs. And the news anchor’s voice still echoed in his skull:
*Prominent businessman Raymond Fornier… targeted explosion… no survivors…*
He knew that name.
Not well. Not personally. But he knew the territory it occupied. Fornier had operated in the gray space between legitimate wealth and the underworld — a man who shook hands with both worlds and trusted apparently that neither would close around him.
*My daddy said to run.*
Alfred turned and walked to the study. Rowan was already there, television muted, a single page of notes in his hand.
— Fornier had silent partners, Rowan said without preamble. — Eastern. Far enough east that you’ve met them before.
The room went still.
Alfred remembered a warehouse. A waterfront table. A silver-haired man named Gregor Vasile who had smiled and said *expansion is natural* before Alfred told him to leave his city.
He had left.
But he had not stopped. He had simply moved sideways. Found a new door. Found Fornier. Found leverage.
And now the key — the only thing standing between a dead man’s daughter and the men who had burned his house down around him — was in a mustard sweater on Alfred’s sofa.
— She stays here, Alfred said.
— If they trace her here — Rowan began.
— Good.
Rowan studied him for a long moment. Twenty years of reading Alfred Christa, and he still sometimes found something in the man he had not expected.
— They’re already hunting, Rowan said quietly. — Street level. Corrupt officers. A reward large enough to buy anyone who might have seen her.
Alfred looked back toward the sitting room.
*Find someone feared.*
The fire crackled. The city waited. Somewhere in the dark, a silver-haired man was building the infrastructure of a conclusion.
Alfred had not decided yet whether he would dismantle it before it arrived.
But he already knew the answer.
