Lonely Rancher Bought a Deaf Girl Sold by Her Drunk Father… Then Discovered She Could Hear His Heart
Chapter 2
The wagon rolled through dusk and dust, winding between low hills and scattered mesquite until the fields widened and the sky opened into a Texas emptiness so vast it seemed to swallow sound. Elias drove in silence, the way he did everything, letting the reins go slack and the horse find its own pace. Behind him, the girl had curled beneath a blanket he had not offered and she had not asked for. Her face was turned to the wind.
He had made a decision back at that auction without knowing he was making one. Now that the dust had settled, he could not have said why. He could not have said who she was, or where she had come from, or what he intended to do with a woman who could not hear a single word he said and would not speak a single one back.
But he had untied the rope. And he did not untie things he had decided to keep.
The ranch appeared at last, low and honest under the fading light: a main house with a slanted roof, a few weathered outbuildings, and a long stretch of prairie where cattle grazed beneath the open sky. It was quiet. It was clean. For a man like him, it had always been enough.
Until now.
