Three days later, Rook had become the strangest animal in the history of the Caldwell K9 unit.
He refused commands. He refused food from every hand that came near his kennel. He paced the concrete floor of his enclosure in a tight, endless loop, ears swiveling toward the door of the wing, waiting — not like a pet waiting for its owner, but like a soldier waiting for orders. The handlers were furious and baffled in equal measure. A dog that had been calm exactly once, in the presence of a blind child, had turned into a stone wall for everyone else.
“He’s broken,” Sergeant Cormac Teague grumbled, leaning against the locker-room wall. He was a big man with a bull’s shoulders and an opinion on everything. “That mutt’s been broken since the war. The kid got lucky, that’s all. Coincidence.”
