I Was Seven Months Pregnant When My Husband Came Home Early and Found His Sister Covering the Bruises on My Arms. Minutes Later, Her Perfect Financial Story Began Falling Apart—and She Had No Idea I Had Already Sent the Original Records to an Independent Auditor.

Chapter 8

The room was silent except for the steady beep of the fetal monitor.

Julian’s hand was trembling. “She’s not my sister.”

“She’s your half-sister,” Mrs. Reyes said quietly. “Your father’s wife, Amelia, had an affair with Aldric twenty-seven years ago. Serena was the result. Your father never knew—or if he did, he never acknowledged it.”

“Then Aldric…”

“Has been controlling the trust that belongs to his own biological child. And he has been doing so for twenty-seven years, while Serena grew up believing she was a Vance, entitled to the Vance fortune.”

I stared at the certificate.

“Did Serena know?”

“According to the encrypted files, she discovered the truth eighteen months ago. She confronted Aldric privately. He denied it, but she had DNA evidence. She used it to blackmail him into authorizing the inflated vendor payments.”

“Blackmail,” Julian repeated.

“Your uncle didn’t just sign those documents because he was negligent. He signed them because Serena was threatening to expose the affair and destroy his marriage, his reputation, and his position in the family.”

Mrs. Reyes paused.

“Serena planned to eventually take full control of the trust. She was positioning herself to replace Aldric as trustee. Once she had control, she could have accessed the entire principal.”

My head was spinning.

“Where is she now?” Julian asked.

“Detained. The police arrived at the house an hour ago. They’re charging her with fraud, forgery, extortion, and unlawful confinement. The assault charges may follow.”

Julian sat down heavily.

“My sister doesn’t exist.”

“She exists,” I said quietly. “She just isn’t who you thought she was.”

He looked at me. The grief in his eyes was raw.

“Neither is my uncle.”

“When did you last speak to Aldric?”

“Tonight. During the chaos, he left. He said he needed to consult with his attorney.”

Mrs. Reyes shook her head. “He’s been taken into custody as well. The police found him at his home, attempting to destroy documents. He’s being charged as an accessory.”

Julian laughed. It was a hollow, broken sound.

“My uncle. My sister. Both of them were stealing from my family.”

“Both of them were protecting themselves,” I said. “And both of them used me to do it.”

He reached for my hand.

“I’m sorry.”

“You already said that.”

“I’ll say it every day for the rest of my life.”

I looked at him. The man I had married. The man who had been absent for six crucial weeks. The man who was now sitting beside my hospital bed, holding my hand, and looking at me like I was the only thing in the world that mattered.

“Don’t say it,” I said. “Show me.”

He didn’t answer.

He just nodded.

And for the first time in six weeks, I felt a small, fragile thread of hope.
