Cora Vane was at the barn door before the sun was fully over the ridge, and she stopped dead at what she found. Walt Sutter already had the mule harnessed and the wagon backed to the hay shed. He was not leaning on a pitchfork waiting to be told what to do. He was working, and he had been working long enough that his breath fogged the cold air.

She stood in the doorway with the tin cup of coffee she’d brought for herself, and he straightened and looked at her, and she held the cup out without thinking. “You don’t wait to be asked, do you.”

“No, ma’am,” he said, and took the coffee. “A man who waits to be asked is a man who eats last.”
