He Chose Her Beautiful Friend Over the Woman Who Loved Him for Years — Then Ten Years Later, He Discovered the Son She Raised Alone Was His

Chapter 2

For three weeks, Amara lived in an absolute dream. Tunde was officially her boyfriend, and to the whole university, they were the perfect couple. But deep inside Tunde’s heart, a silent storm brewed. He cared for Amara — she was comfortable, safe, exactly the woman his mother wanted for him — yet he could not erase Vivian’s image from his mind.

One Saturday, walking out of a bookstore, Tunde froze mid-step. Vivian was walking toward him in a stunning red dress, dark hair bouncing gracefully around her shoulders. Before his brain could tell his legs to hide, they carried him straight into her path.

“I… I am… uh…” Tunde stammered, forgetting his own name entirely.

Vivian looked at the nervous village boy with a small, unreadable smile, said nothing, and walked past him, leaving a trail of expensive perfume behind. Tunde stood frozen, understanding, with something close to terror, exactly how completely he had already become obsessed with a woman who wasn’t his girlfriend.

A week later, at the local market, their paths crossed again. This time Tunde refused to let fear win. “Hello again,” he said, flashing his gentle smile. “I promise I remember my own name today.” Vivian laughed, and before she could vanish again, he gathered his courage. “Can I have your phone number?”

She wrote a number on his palm, whispered “Call me,” and disappeared into the market crowd. That night, alone in his room, Tunde discovered the number was missing its final two digits — whether by accident or design, he couldn’t tell. He spent until three in the morning dialing every possible combination, until finally, on the forty-seventh try, a sleepy voice answered.

From that night forward, Tunde lived a dangerous double life — Amara’s devoted boyfriend by day, Vivian’s secret admirer by night, texting her under his blanket while Amara slept peacefully in her own hostel, entirely unaware.

What Tunde never learned, and what Vivian herself would carry as a private, uneasy secret for years afterward, was that her sudden, deliberate interest in her best friend’s boyfriend had not begun purely as attraction. Vivian’s own family had, for two generations, nursed a quiet resentment toward Amara’s family over a disputed parcel of ancestral land — a grudge neither young woman had ever been told the full shape of, but that Vivian’s mother had, months before that rainy campus visit, made unmistakably clear she expected her daughter to somehow use to her family’s advantage, whatever opportunity eventually presented itself.

“Amara’s family thinks they’re better than us because of that land,” Vivian’s mother had told her, more than once, across Vivian’s childhood. “One day, if the chance comes, you make sure something of theirs becomes yours instead.” Vivian had laughed off the instruction as her mother’s old bitterness, until the rainy afternoon she’d wandered into a stranger’s hostel room and recognized, with a considerable jolt, exactly whose devoted boyfriend she’d stumbled upon.

She told herself, in the months that followed, that she’d simply fallen for Tunde honestly, that her mother’s old grudge had nothing to do with it. But some quiet, dishonest part of her understood perfectly well that the timing, and the particular satisfaction she felt each time she pulled Tunde a little further from Amara’s orbit, carried considerably more calculation than she ever allowed herself to examine too closely.

One Tuesday, Amara invited Vivian for lunch, glowing with happiness, sharing news of her relationship with Tunde with the particular open trust of someone who had never once considered her closest friend capable of betrayal. Vivian, who had received a sweet text from Tunde that very morning calling her his beautiful queen, smiled and lied smoothly. “That’s really amazing news, Amara. I’m very happy for you.”

That same weekend, at a quiet restaurant far from campus, Tunde held Vivian’s hands across the table. “I cannot stop thinking about you,” he confessed. “Will you be my girlfriend?”

Vivian knew exactly what she was doing to Amara. She said yes anyway.
