Dawn came rose and gold over the mountains, and Clara was already dressed when the knock sounded at her door. She had lain awake all night cataloguing the creaks of a house that wasn’t hers, the too-soft bed, the too-quiet dark. Kindness was a gift, but gifts could be taken back. Better to leave before the taking.

She opened the door to find Elias Hartley standing in the hallway with Ollie in his arms — Ollie, clean, dressed in clothes that actually fit, his dark eyes bright and alert in a way they hadn’t been in weeks.

“He fussed a bit,” Elias said, his voice softer than she’d ever heard it. “Rosa thought he might be hungry.”
