Everyone Wanted the White Puppy—But He Wouldn’t Leave Without Her
Chapter 2
Weeks earlier, the two puppies had been found inside a plastic pet carrier abandoned beside a quiet county road in the wooded country south of Ironwood.
Deputy Frank Marsh had been the one to find them, at the end of a long night shift he had almost not worked. The temperature had dropped below freezing, and the carrier — a large blue plastic crate, the kind meant for a single dog — sat half-hidden in the ditch, partially covered by a blown-down branch. He had almost driven past it. Something made him slow down. A shadow in the headlights, or the way the plastic glinted. He never knew.
The carrier’s rear corner was cracked open, a jagged wedge of broken plastic leaving a narrow gap where the cold air pushed straight in. Beside that gap, on a piece of cardboard and half an old blanket, lay a small sable puppy with a limp back leg and blood dried dark on her fur.
