Every Night,Stray Dog Barks at a Mafia Boss House—Until BLACK MAID Discovers What No One Not.
Chapter 2
Zora’s mouth went dry. Her heart felt too large for her chest. Everything in her training told her to leave. Everything in her fear told her to walk back to the house and forget this moment. Everything in her survival instinct told her that investigating something on Dominic Serrano’s property could cost her this job — could cost her the money her family depended on, could cost her everything.
The dog turned and looked at the building’s door, then back at her, then at the door again. The message was unmistakable.
“No,” Zora whispered. “I can’t.” The dog barked again, louder, more insistent. “I’ll lose my job. I’ll have nothing. I need this money. My mom needs this money. My sister—” The dog pawed at the ground, leaving marks in the dirt.
Zora stepped closer. The building’s door was wooden, weathered, with a lock that looked newer than everything else about the structure. Professional. The kind of lock that was there for a reason, that kept something in or kept something out. She could feel something radiating from behind that door, something that made her skin prickle. The small window was too high to see into without climbing something. It was covered from inside with heavy fabric, dark and impenetrable.
She heard it then — a sound so quiet she almost missed it. A voice, a woman’s voice, too low to understand the words, but she could hear the tone beneath the language. Fear. Desperation. A need so profound it seemed to bend the air around it.
