After Five Years in Saudi Arabia, I Came Home Without Warning and Found My Wife and Son Starving in a Shed Behind the Mansion I Had Paid For—While My Mother and Sister Were Inside Throwing a Lavish Party With the Money I Sent Home.

My feet carried me away from the shed before my mind could catch up. I rounded the garage, skirted the rows of trimmed hedges, and stepped into the wash of golden light that spilled from the mansion’s windows. The music hammered against the night, bass thrumming through the soles of my shoes, and somewhere a woman’s laugh rose above the noise like a bird.

A security guard materialized out of the shadows and raised a hand.

“This is a private event, sir,” he said.

He was new. Hired, probably, in some year I’d missed. He studied my dusty travel clothes, the grit baked into my jacket, with open suspicion.

“I’m just visiting,” I said.
