A Silent Dog Arrived At The Mafia Boss’s Home With An SOS Note—Then Everything Changed
Chapter 2
Ronan Hale arrived at 3:31 in the morning, thirteen minutes before the mark he’d set for himself, because in eighteen years Ronan had never once shown up late to his own word. Gray heard the tires grind the gravel, a V8 engine muffled to a whisper, three short knocks in a rhythm only two men in the world knew.
Ronan came through the door carrying the smell of cold coffee and clean gunpowder, a gray wool coat buttoned to the throat, a worn silver duffel under one arm and the grip of a Kimber riding his right hip — the bluing worn away years ago to bare steel. He didn’t take his coat off. He walked straight through the living room, glanced once at the mastiff standing guard beside the plastic crate, and turned to look at Gray.
“Were you planning to kill the big one yet?” he asked.
“Still considering it.”
Ronan set the duffel down, unzipped it, and laid out his tools in a sequence Gray had watched him repeat on a hundred nights in a hundred houses, never once out of order: black nitrile gloves, tactical glasses, a signal detector the length of a palm, a flashlight fitted with a violet filter, an infrared thermometer.
He knelt in front of the mastiff. He didn’t offer a hand to sniff — that was what amateurs did. He looked into her eyes for three seconds, gave a small nod, and the dog allowed him to touch her neck. The detector moved slowly along her body from ear to tail, then over the leather collar. Not a single beep.
