The yard was quiet that first evening. The wind had gone to sleep. The only sounds were the far-off mutter of traffic, the creak of a porch board, and my two dogs watching from the steps like they had been told something important was about to happen.
Juno saw her first. My Doberman, all muscle and assurance, made a slow, deliberate circle around the crate. Ears forward. Tail still. She read every angle of it the way she reads every new thing that enters her kingdom — not growling, not posturing, just cataloguing. When she was satisfied, she sat down three feet away and turned her attention to the sky.
