Three days earlier, on a Wednesday, the world had been ordinary.

Late October had turned Crossford, Michigan cold and quiet. Frost appeared on the porch steps before sunrise. The wind off the water carried enough of a bite that most people went indoors soon after dark, and the streets emptied early. Emmett had lived in the small house near the edge of town since his retirement, and his life had simplified itself down to a rhythm he could set a watch by. Morning walk. Afternoon beneath the maple tree. Evening walk before dinner. Sable beside him the whole way, seven years of service behind her and nothing ahead but the slow, patient business of being old.

That Wednesday afternoon, they were walking home along a narrow residential road when Sable slowed.
