Snow had gathered along its roofline and porch steps. The windows were dark, the chimney cold, the pines crowded behind it in black-green ranks. The old place looked smaller than he remembered, and somehow more stubborn — an aging man refusing help while leaning on a cane. The brass windchime on the porch moved once as he climbed the steps, and a thin bronze note rang out into the evening.
The sound stopped him cold. That had been Silas’s. For one second he was twelve again, wearing boots too big for him, watching his grandfather knock snow from a shovel.
