A Cowboy Got The Bride Nobody Wanted- She Knew More About Horses Than Any Man in the Territory
Chapter 2
The Hollister Ranch came into view the way a storm front does — you saw it a long time before it reached you, and by the time you understood its size, it was already everywhere.
Nell had seen big operations before. Her father had worked spreads in three territories, and she remembered the geometry of them, the pens and barns all staked out in a man’s idea of order. But this was something else. This was a kingdom of grass that ran to every horizon, cattle scattered across it like punctuation, and at its heart a cluster of buildings that smelled, even from a hundred yards, of horse sweat and leather and wood smoke. The smell of men who worked until dark and expected the world to work too.
She stopped at the gate and let the truth of her situation settle one more time. No references. No name anyone would vouch for. A dress that had once been cream and now was the color of the road. And two hands raised to know a horse the way other women knew a Bible.
It was going to have to be enough.
The first man she met was a wall of a foreman with a face like a clenched fist. He stepped off the porch before she reached the bottom of the front steps, planting himself in her path with the casual arrogance of a man who had never once been told no.
