The elevator let me out into a lobby that smelled of antiseptic and fresh flowers, and I stood there long enough to realize I had no idea what floor I needed. A nurse pointed me toward the NICU without looking up from her screen. Through the glass wall of the second-floor corridor, rows of tiny plastic beds glowed under warm lights, and around each one, machines breathed in gentle, repetitive rhythms, like a room full of small tides.
The nurse at the desk found my name on a list, looked at me with something like recognition, and buzzed me through. “He’s your son, Mr. Vance. Bassinet seven. He’s small, but he’s doing remarkably well for thirty-two weeks.”
I walked past six bassinets before I found him.
